Great post Tanja and loved the quote from Keith Hering. It’s the story of knowing what you don’t know but unfortunately most of us have unconscious incompetence - we don’t know what we don’t know. We all make bad decisions each day because we are unconsciously incompetent. It is hard to move to being consciously incompetent but it is a start.

Pet peeve alert, as this has annoyed me since high school: Socrates never said that and it wouldn’t have made sense for him to say something this inane. Along with virtue knowledge is THE big issue discussed throughout the Platonic dialogues. Socrates did like to needle his compatriots about their pretensions to knowledge and to point out the areas of their ignorance.

The part that comes closest to the quote is in the Apology where Socrates says roughly “at least I don’t pretend to know what I don’t know” or “at least I know what I don’t know”.

Less pithy but much more insightful.

Apologies for being a dork.
