I could make this the shortest Letter ever…
My best day is today!
That’s essentially it…
Ok, I will elaborate just a little more on why today is my best day or why I try to make it my best day.
My friend Ritesh (someone really worth following on Twitter), with whom I just had a lovely conversation yesterday, would probably say that his best day is when he plays, which in his case essentially means today is most likely also his best day, no matter when he reads this.
“I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.”― Groucho Marx
Do you know people who are grumpy on Monday’s (or even already on Sunday evening) and starting Wednesday they start talking about how they cannot wait for Friday and the weekend to finally begin? Perhaps you have heard them say, “I am so happy that the week is finally over”. I used to know these kinds of people and do my best to not surround myself with them any longer. I never quite understood this attitude and it always pains me when I hear people speak so disparagingly about their own lifetime - it seems like such a waste to only enjoy life from Friday evening to Sunday evening. Our life is finite and it is up to us how we spend it and what we make of it. We can choose how we want to spend our time and who we want to spend it with - most of the time.
“I promise myself that I will enjoy every minute of the day that is given me to live.”― Thich Nhat Hanh
Don’t get me wrong, I sometimes have really crappy days, I mean seriously crappy, devastating days where I don’t even want to get out of bed.
Yet even on those days I do my best to tell myself that this is my time, my life, my day and thus my best day. Some might find that naive and I will be the first to admit that it does not always work for me – here we have once again the discrepancy between theory and practice.
“Don’t be the one who wakes up the next day regretting having not taken that last dance with a loved one or even with yourself.”― Helen Edwards
And trust me, it took me a quite some time to get there. What really helped me was having the right people around me and the Enneagram, which is an amazing eye opener. It showed me what motivated me and why I dwell on the past. And dwell I did - to a point where I even bored myself senseless with the same sad old story.
If you would like to connect with me I would be happy to take the time for a speed coaching call that you can reserve right here or go directly to my website.
I do still have my triggers that prevent me from seeing today as my best day once in a while and I have learned to recognise these so much faster to then act in my very best interest.
Something else that truly helped me to enjoy every single day of my life, no matter what it may throw at me is meditation - doing absolutely nothing but to breathe. It is quite simple and you do not need any special skills, except knowing how to breathe (comes in rather handy, don’t you think?) in and - yes you may have guessed - out! Nature is something else I turn to when I feel low. I go for a run, a long walk or just take my bike. In the end it is about mindfulness. I am sure you have heard this a gazillion times and you sometimes believe to be mindful and kind to yourself but if you do a reality check once in a while you will probably often find that you are being rather the opposite.
For many the mindful intake of food is already an issue. Check yourself how you eat, if there are any distractions while you eat like a phone, your computer, television etc. Do you gobble your food like you will never ever get anything to eat again or as if someone might grab your food from you? Do you really taste your food and enjoy every bite? Do you take your time to eat? I think you know where I am going and this is only one example of things you do on a daily basis (unless you are a supermodel and only eat once a week). So just check you daily habits once in a while and see where you could be kinder to yourself and more mindful to make today your very best day.
And sometimes it takes just a little TLC…😉
🎶My Song of the Week
📚My Poem of the Week
I chose a poem by Mr. Inspirational or the Poet of the People, Edgar Albert Guest (1881–1959).
Have You Earned Your Tomorrow
Is anybody happier because you passed his way?
Does anyone remember that you spoke to him today?
This day is almost over, and its toiling time is through;
Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you?
Did you give a cheerful greeting to the friend who came along?
Or a churlish sort of "Howdy" and then vanish in the throng?
Were you selfish pure and simple as you rushed along the way,
Or is someone mighty grateful for a deed you did today?
Can you say tonight, in parting with the day that's slipping fast,
That you helped a single brother of the many that you passed?
Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said;
Does a man whose hopes were fading now with courage look ahead?
Did you waste the day, or lose it, was it well or sorely spent?
Did you leave a trail of kindness or a scar of discontent?
As you close your eyes in slumber do you think that God would say,
You have earned one more tomorrow by the work you did today?
