„Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill.“ — Gautama Buddha
We all know the power of words, at least for me words and language have always been very important and meaningful.
I find it frightening how words and language are increasingly being used against us.
What I am seeing and experiencing at the moment - and I don't even watch television - sometimes makes me almost despair. Fortunately, I live in a small village and not in the city, but when I drive into town I am overwhelmed by the flood of posters that scare the hell out of me. We are currently experiencing a level of censorship and manipulation of the narrative that has never been seen before - at least in my lifetime. Even the knife attack in Mannheim, in which a policeman was killed by an Islamist, is being twisted in such a way that we need to take even stronger action against right-wing extremism in Germany. Demonstrations against right-wing extremism are being organised and it has now got to the point where AFD politicians, their party, and therefore their voters (16% in the European elections) can be called Nazis in a TV talk show without anyone intervening or taking offense whatsoever.
Words like Nazi and right-wing extremist have lost all meaning and I still see it as a contemptuous trivialisation of the suffering that was inflicted on people under the Nazi regime.
Especially when you ask what a Nazi or a right-wing extremist actually is, what these words mean, most people are speechless and start to squirm. They simply shout slogans without giving the slightest thought to what they mean. Whoever shouts the loudest and most often wins.
„Words kill, words give life; they're either poison or fruit - YOU choose.“ — Solomon
With the constant denigration of language, with the restrictions on what can and cannot be said - not that I would abide by them - our society is being brought further and further to its knees. We are being categorised into left and right wing and yet no one, or very few seem to ask what’s good and bad or right and wrong anymore. When pensioners in German cities are forced to collect returnable bottles from rubbish bins in order to buy something to eat, then something is terribly wrong. But if they are then also reported for theft because these bottles, once they are in the bins, are the property of the city, then we have failed.
Even a disastrous presidential debate in which the incumbent president is held up to ridicule is still being tried to be talked up somehow. I have only seen snippets of the debate but enough to understand that America has a senile or demented man in charge who is not only incapable of standing as a candidate in the November election but also incapable of governing the country for the months to come. Since the alternative at this time would be Kamala Harris, I understand the reluctance to take him out of the office for the remaining months.
What affected me the most was the humiliation of Biden, especially from his own wife who praised him like an obedient dog after the debate. I was waiting for her to scratch him behind the ears and give him a treat. No matter what I or anyone else may think of Biden, I don’t believe in public humiliation of an obviously very sick man nor of the humiliation of a nation. But I am drifting off. As I said, I love words, I love poetry, and I love the power of words. Words can be used for good and for evil. The current censorship, the twisting of words in the best George Orwell style is frightening, at least as long as people go along with the madness.
"Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively using words of despair. Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble…" — Yehuda Berg
I have always taught my children that they should question everything - including me - and if something seems simple and logical, it is usually so and good. If it is incomprehensible and complicated, then in most cases something is wrong.
"No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world." — John Keating
What I miss most these days is a free exchange of thoughts and ideas without being immediately judged or labelled. Sometimes I even have the feeling that I can no longer really follow the language. George Carlin has described it wonderfully here in his typical way...
Our society is constantly changing and that's a good thing. However, I am very concerned about the current direction. Words have meaning and they should be chosen carefully.

Risk
And then the day came, when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.

Thank you for the recommendation Tanja. Your post this week is important because as you say, there is a narrative that is being presented and it is being backed up to try to tell us that all is OK and that we need to look elsewhere for any threats. In the US, people praying outside abortion clinics are said to be the real threat. I liked what you said: "if something seems simple and logical, it is usually so and good. If it is incomprehensible and complicated, then in most cases something is wrong."
The Trump shooting is terrible but has been promoted by all those who have said he is a threat to mankind. These are really challenging times.
Who ever controls the narrative controls the world…thats where today’s battles are fought with words and images. I enjoyed reading this, the quotes, the poem and the George Carlin is brilliant. Thanks for writing and sharing 🙏🏻
