Sympathies. We had a (much milder) version of your trial. A "client" emailed to say that she had lost her voice and was unable to speak - so no use calling her to verify - but wanted to send some money urgently to a friend who was seriously ill. This clearly raised our suspicions and our "client" had clearly had her email account hacked. The digital economy requires constant vigilance.
Thank you, Tim! It is truly amazing what some people are willing to do to harm others. Playing on the instincts and most primal emotions of their victims appears to be key. It almost worked on me.
I changed numbers a while back as I was getting so many calls and messages I new I was hacked somewhere.
A month with the new number and immediately I was getting as many calls.
Another sinister side of all this is that they need only a owrson to answer with a hello and with AI can clone your voice to trick your family and friends to extract money from them .
They are also using delivery companies like DHL etc to con . my friend whom I had shipped something to and then cancelled due to a wrong House number then received a mail requesting a login with all details to receive the package. the site looked to be DHL legit but was fake.
Thank you for sharing this, David! It is amazing how many of these stories are surfacing. I had not realised how many people are affected by these scams. It’s pure evil.
My sympathies. This is a major reason why neither I nor anyone from my close family is on social media and have scrubbed our data as far as possible. It’s incredibly easy to put together a plausible story like the one you relate from the information people make available. Add to that AI voice technology and you don’t even have the „tell“ of a non-fluent speaker on the other side anymore.
Oh my goodness Tanja - what a horror story. What is shocking is that this fake guy had so much correct information. I suppose that this is the result of the availability of info on the internet. It is clearly a scam that works many times and there are great lessons for us all. I can understand how you responded as in the midst of the shocking story that was outlined to you, your mind can just go numb and you want to fix the problem. I suppose one of the important lessons for me is to never answer a number you don't recognise. I read a few months ago that 25% of those under 25 years of age had never answered a phone call! It looks to me that this may be best practice. Thank you for alerting us all.
Thank you for your sympathy, Reuben. It is rather mind boggling what measures some people are taking to scam and scare others. I had not realised how common these scams are.

This more frequent every day.

Thank you, York! You are absolutely right, it has become much too easy to obtain information, especially for people with no conscience…

I think I would have been the same, thanks for sharing this warning.
I believe many of us that simply aren’t that malicious would have reacted pretty much the same as they play on the most primal instincts…
