The New Year is just a week old and I know from experience, that many use the start of a New Year for New Year's resolutions. For some reason that has always made me giggle and I have never quite understood that "tradition". If I want to do something, I do not want to wait for a certain time or date, I simply do it - even if in all honesty, it doesn't always work out. But I have always seen the waiting for New Year as a great excuse to procrastinate what most will not do or see through anyway. As I am really not one for New Yearโs resolutions I will spare you that - others are so much better at it than me.
So my first Letter of the new year is dedicated to one of the most beautiful pastimes, to KISSING.
Most of us would probably agree, KISSING is great! And again I could end here and it would be a very short Letter. But I am someone who truly loves to kiss, so allow me to elaborate just a little more on this topic as I put a lot of thought into itโฆ
When we speak about kissing, we usually think of the act itself and I promise I will come to that. But I want to look at kissing from a different angle first - the health benefits. I think itโs wonderful to do something really enjoyable like kissing and at the same time improving your health. So here are some of the truly amazing benefits of kissing:
It burns calories: Yes, believe it or not, it is true. Casual kissing on the couch for example, burns about 2-3 calories per minute - admittely not that much, so you just have to go longer. Whereas some say that passionate kissing supposedly burns 5-26 calories per minute - now we are talking. Admittedly these numbers may not be the most accurate as it probably depends very much on your passion. But why not, just for a change, do a kissing โworkoutโ with your loved one. Depending on what that may lead to you might just burn some really serious calories.
It reduces pain: When you engage in a heated kissing session your body is triggered to release adrenaline, which is known to reduce pain. So next time you experience pain, just try kissing as a remedy! And now you know why kissing makes everything better.
It tightens your facial muscles and with that your skin: We have 43 facial muscles and a kiss requires the use of 23-34 of these, depending on the intensity of the kiss. As you can imagine, this ensures a workout of your facial muscles and keeps them strong for a long time, leaving both kissers looking younger and feeling better. I find this much more appealing as a form of rejuvination than surgery or other horribly invasive options.
It makes you happy: When kissing, the release of endorphines is initiated and these make us feel happy. Endorphins are known to be the hormones responsible for happiness. Studies have even suggested that kissing can help against depression better than psychological treatments or antidepressants.
I am sure there can be so much more said about the health benefits of kissing but I will leave it at that now.
โThe decision to kiss for the first time is the most crucial one in any love story.โ โ Emil Ludwig
The very first kiss with someone you really like can be simply unbelievable. Have you ever savoured that moment just before the first kiss, when you know it is about to happen, the anticipation of your lips finally touching?
The heart beats faster, the skin begins to tingle and the knees become weak. It is an incredibly erotic moment just before the lips touch for the very first time. You wish that this moment will never end and at the same time you long for the touching of the lips. You want to feel and taste that kiss. When the moment is there, first carefully and then more and more passionately, it feels like an explosion of feelings in mind and body.
โKissing is like drinking salted water. You drink, and your thirst increases.โ โ Chinese Proverb
You know it is a great kiss when you both cannot get enough, when you lose all sense of time and everything around you. If you have not been so lucky as to experience this yourself, I am sure you have seen people around you that cannot stop kissing one another and you have caught yourself thinking; โgo get a roomโ. Be lenient with these people. They probably donโt even realise that they are being a total nuisance to their environment, they just donโt even realise that others exist in this time and space.
โAny man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.โ โ Albert Einstein
What is amazing is that when you are truly โkiss-compatibleโ with someone โ which is absolute bliss โ that it is most likely the best foreplay ever. The greatest news is that with the right person you can have this โfirst kissโ feeling again and again and again โ thankfully. My actual first kiss was quite a catastrophe when I think of it and I am glad I did not give up after that - and believe me, I almost did!
โHer lips on his could tell him better than all her stumbling words.โ โ Margaret Mitchell
This is so true! You can say so much with just a kiss. You can express all your feelings, your love and passion with a kiss. When you melt into the arms of another and you become one, feeling your everyday worries washing away.
โSoul meets soul on loversโ lips.โ โ Percy Bysshe Shelley
So never underestimate the importance of kissing or showing endearments to your partner. For me, in a good relationship, the kissing, as well as holding hands is something quite essential.
โA kiss is a lovely trick designed by nature to stop speech when words become superfluous.โ โ Ingrid Bergman
A kiss is something so complex, something electrifying. A good kiss takes your breath away and awakens the desire for more. A kiss can be the deciding factor in a relationship. I for one could never be with someone I donโt like to kiss with all my passion.
It almost always starts with a first kiss. Who doesnโt remember the first wild snog at a party or at the cinema when you cannot even recall the title of the film. There are so many famous kissing scenes in films, so much poetry has been written about kissing and of course there are a myriad of songs around this wonderful topic.
As you probably know by now is that I absolutely love music and there are so many amazing songs about kissing. So I have started a collaborative playlist on Spotify. Feel free to add more wonderful kissing songs:
๐My Poem of the Week
I really want to share a beautiful poem about kissing by the amazing American poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933):
The Look
Strephon kissed me in the spring,
Robin in the fall,
But Colin only looked at me
And never kissed at all.
Strephonโs kiss was lost in jest,
Robinโs lost in play,
But the kiss in Colinโs eyes
Haunts me night and day.
I love this poem as it says so very much about kissing and the different kinds of kisses. Some kisses are just beautiful, some kisses are fun, some are easily forgotten and some linger on. But a kiss that never happened can be the most memorable. In this poem it is described as โthe kiss in Colinโs eyesโ that haunts her.
๐ถMy Song of the Week
This is one of my favourite songs by an exceptional artist - Greg Brownโs โYou Drive Me Crazyโ- something that can most certainly be achieved with a great kiss!
If you love music as much as I do, you may appreciate that the songs of every Change & Evolve Letter can be found in the growing Spotify playlist. Just click and follow:
๐Impressions
Perhaps you expected me to post a kissing photo and hope you are not disappointed. But just imagine being in this spot by the lake, kissing someone passionately that you truly love๐
Wishing you a weekend full of passionate and wonderful kissing!
