🕯The Advent season has finally begun. I love this season very much. The year is not quite over and it is a time of anticipation and reflection. For me it is a time I always look forward to.
Today my personal Advent calendar for you begins with a daily poem, a song, an impression, and a thought I want to share with you. I hope it brings you as much joy reading the poem, listening to the song, viewing the image, and receiving some food for thought I chose for you, as I enjoy the process of choosing them.
📚My Poem of the Day
I want to share with you a beautiful poem by one of my all time favourite poets, Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919).
I have been thinking a lot about friendship lately and how easily we tend to call people in our lives friends. I have very few true friends and with that I am vastly rich. “My Friend” by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, is a poem that shows so beautifully what friendship can do for you, how it can enrich your life and I believe this has become more important now than ever. So if you have real friends, take very good care of them.
MY FRIEND
When first I looked upon the face of pain
I shrank repelled, as one shrinks from a foe
Who stands with dagger poised, as for a blow.
I was in search of Pleasure and of gain.
I turned aside to let him pass; in vain—
He looked straight in my eyes and would not go.
“Shake hands!” he said; “our paths are one, and so
We must be comrades on the way, ’tis plain.”
I felt the firm clasp of his hand on mine ;
Through all my veins it sent a strengthening glow ;
I straightway linked my arm in his, and lo !
He led me forth to joys almost divine—
With God’s great truths enriched me, in the end,
And now I hold him as my dearest friend.
🎶My Song of the Day
My choice of song is almost too obvious… I found this beautiful live version of the song “You’ve Got a Friend” by Carole King.
👀Impressions of the Day
I took this photo while running at the Starnberger See on the landing stage to the Rose Island (Roseninsel).
💭Thought of the Day
Especially this time of year it is a time to spend with friends and family, with people we love and care for. Most of us have people in our lives that we may have not spoken to for a long time, with whom contact has fallen off, but whom we think of from time to time. Maybe there was an argument or we just drifted apart a little. Why not give someone you care for, and haven’t heard from, possibly for years - for whatever reasons - a call? If you can’t bring yourself to call, sit down and write a letter - no, email or messaging does not count - make it count.
